Player Ratings: Arsenal 3-0 Villarreal
Arsenal cantered away from Villarreal for a comprehensive 3-0 win on the night; Goal.com rates the participants...
Fabianski 8.0 A much more confident prospect between the sticks with a run of games behind him. Caught well, punched well and held his fair share of shots. Provided decent distribution also.
Toure 7.5 Marshalled the defence well, if a little deep, all evening. Arsenal needed maturity at the back and he provided it; communicated well and was first to his challenges.
Silvestre 6.0 Possibly the shakiest member of the makeshift back four; conceded a number of fouls in and around the Arsenal area. Never quite ruffled to the point of distraction however.
Eboue 8.0 Strong showing down the right flank. Eager to get things going and was urgent in possession. Doubled up with Walcott to create a formidable right side. Sagna was simply not missed.
Gibbs 7.0 Steady, solid and unspectacular on his debut. Maintained his discipline well and managed to pass Nasri to deliver some crosses.
Fabregas 7.0 Created a wonderful goal for Walcott with his ingenuity. Enjoyed the run of the midfield in the absence of Senna, being allowed to run through his repertoire of passes.
Song 6.5 Was ineffective through Villarreal's best spell, but had a more than adequate 75-odd minutes. Broke up the play with relish and played the simple passes well.
Walcott 9.0 Lit the touchpaper for a magnificent Arsenal performance by positively roasting the Spain international, Capdevila. A constant outlet for a pass on the right flank and was the Gunners' sharpest attacking weapon. A mature, measured display, scoring and winning a decisive penalty.
Nasri 6.0 A very quiet evening's work, aside from a few accurate passes.
Adebayor 7.0 Caught offside a number of times and his touch looked to be a little off. However, the world's best strikers are rarely quiet for long. Took his goal exceedingly well.
van Persie 7.0 Created the goal for Adebayor, and did his best work essentially away from the Villarreal goal. Dispatched his spot-kick with aplomb too.
Substitutes:
Denilson n/a Limited to the odd touch.
Diaby n/a Showed some decent touches.
Bendtner n/a Enjoyed the run-out; had some good possession.
Villarreal:
Lopez 6.0 Made some decent stops but stood no chance on the goals. A few hairy moments on crosses and with parries.
Godin 5.5 Limited Arsenal's central front-two in the first half with his robust defending. Picked up a booking for a poor challenge on van Persie as Arsenal starting gaining the initiative.
Gonzalo 5.5 Conceded innumerable free-kicks; an inevitability with his uncompromising style. Was on hand with an essential block or two but could not prevent Adebayor scoring when left isolated.
Angel 6.5 Ran the line well, supporting the likes of Cani. Nasri had a very quiet game; some credit for that fact should go to Angel.
Capdevila 3.0 An absolute horror show. Was torn asunder by Walcott; for the opener and for the penalty. Far, far off the standard to which we are accustomed.
Mati 6.0 Caused a few early problems with his forward runs but lost the run of the game and was sacrificed.
Bruno 5.0 Took the simple passes from his colleagues as Villarreal enjoyed their best spell. However, he was culpable for allowing Robin van Persie a free run at the heart of defence for the second goal. Provided only a semi permeable barrier.
Erugen 4.0 A heavy presence in midfield, but blotted his copybook with a gross display of indiscipline following an unnecessary booking only a few minutes previous.
Cani 5.0 His trickery in the first half threatened to unsettle the Gunners, and he was on hand to give and receive passes in the final third. Could not sustain his level of influence however.
Pires 5.5 Aside from one or two strikes at goal and the odd lay-off, was pretty subdued on his Arsenal return.
Rossi 4.0 Anonymous. Could not make an impact.
Substitutes:
Ibagaza n/a Could not find the ball in midfield, with his side outnumbered.
Nihat n/a One or two off target strikes.
Jordi n/a Scarcely touched the ball.
