Fabio Aurelio: Europa League Is Important To Liverpool

European silverware still an option for struggling Reds…

CL: Fabio Aurelio, Chelsea v Liverpool (PA)

Liverpool defender Fabio Aurelio has admitted that he and his team-mates are gutted to be out of the Champions League, but are determined to make up for their premature exit by winning the less prestigious Europa League.

A 1-0 win at Debrecen last night proved insufficient to keep the Reds' faint hopes of Champions League progression alive, but Aurelio is sure that the supporters will see a positive reaction from the team.

"There's frustration. We know we're out of the Champions League for this season, but we have an opportunity in a competition that is new for us - the Europa League. Now we have to concentrate on that," the Brazilian told his club's official website.

"It is an opportunity to win a trophy and that's how we'll go into this competition thinking. At Liverpool, every competition is important - we want to win trophies.

"We will have a great chance to get a trophy and we'll go for it.

"There is still a long way go until May but we have to improve."

Next up for Rafa Benitez's team is the Merseyside derby against Everton on Sunday. Aurelio knows that anything less than a victory would be bad for the red half of the city.

"But first we have to improve in the Premier League - we know we have to do better and we have a massive game at the weekend," he added.

"We know it's the derby and we'll try to do things properly and get the three points."
