Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has bemoaned the injuries sustained by William Gallas and Kieran Gibbs during the club's recent 2-0 victory over Standard Liege in the Champions League.

Gallas was involved in a clash of heads with Andrey Arshavin that saw the Russian require staples in his head to continue, while the groggy Frenchman had to be taken off during the half-time break.

"Gallas has an ankle problem and a swollen eye," Wenger is quoted in The Sun as saying.

"I think he'll recover from the eye and we hope for the ankle for the Chelsea game."

While Gallas has a chance of making it to the blockbuster clash against Chelsea over the weekend, the former Monaco boss concedes that Gibbs' condition is a lot more serious.

The young left-back was caught on the wrong end of a heavy challenge from Eliaquim Mangala, and Wenger made it clear that he was unhappy with the nature of the incident.

"Gibbs is much more serious," he added.

"He has a big hole in his leg.

"It was a very bad challenge from the No.22 and it was not his first try.

"Unfortunately he doesn't look too good. The vibes from the medical team were not very positive."

The Gunners now have Gibbs as well as Gael Clichy sidelined through injury, and will be without a regular left-back when they face Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
