Liverpool's Steven Gerrard: You Get What You Deserve In The Champions League

Liverpool captain can't complain with Champions League exit...

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was disappointed to be out of this season’s Champions League but admitted his team haven’t been good enough to go through to the knock-out stages.

"You get what you deserve in this competition," Gerrard told Sky Sports.

"We shouldn’t have had to rely on other teams tonight, but we did and that’s the disappointing thing.

"The late goals against Lyon is where it was lost but we now have to move on and go onwards and upwards and look to win the Europa League.

"It’s not the same as the Champions League, because everyone wants to win the big prizes not the secondary trophy, but we are in that competition now and we’ll do our best to win it."

The England midfielder also stressed that it’s now even more important that Liverpool qualify for next season's Champions League.

"It’s important to finish in the top four, from a financial point of view for the club and personally I want to be playing in the competition next season," he added.

"You can see tonight we played really well and if we stick together and get all the players back fit, then we can turn things around and we are confident we can do that."

David Ngog’s goal gave Liverpool a 1-0 win over Debrecen on the night but thanks to Fiorentina’s win against Lyon in Florence, the Reds crash out at the group stage for the first time since 2002.
