Gullit: Poor stadiums are Italian football's biggest problem

The former Netherlands international has voiced his opinion that it's crucial for domestic clubs to improve their facilities in order to boost attendances, like Juventus have done

Ruud Gullit feels that the poor state of Serie A stadiums is the biggest problem facing Italian football at the moment.

The former AC Milan star has urged clubs to follow in the footsteps of Juventus and improve their facilities in an attempt to lure more people to the stadiums again.

Only three Serie A teams had an average attendance over 35,000 during the 2011-12 season - AC Milan, Inter and Juventus – with more than half of the teams failing to attract more than 20,000 on a regular basis.

"The biggest problem in Italian football now are the stadiums. They are old and people don't want to go there," Gullit stated to the Daily Mail.

"Juventus' attendances were poor and then they opened a new stadium and all of a sudden it was packed. The seats are nice, the facilities are good and they are proud of it. Other clubs need to do the same.

"Win Euro 2012 and the attendances might creep up again."

Italy meet England in the Euro 2012 quarter-finals on Sunday evening.
