The Competition Committee have imposed one-match bans on Barcelona striker David Villa and Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta after their red cards in Saturday’s match at San Mames.
Amorebieta was given his marching orders for a lunge on Andres Iniesta on the halfway line as the match approached half-time, a decision which enraged the partisan home support.
Villa then saw red in the second half after lashing out at Carlos Gurpegi as the two tangled when chasing a loose ball.
Discussions took place yesterday to determine a suitable source of punishment for the players following the incidents, and a one-match suspension has been deemed sufficient.
Villa will now be absent from Barcelona’s home match versus Mallorca on Sunday, while Amorebieta will miss the trip to face Valencia at the Mestalla.
In addition, Jose Antonio Reyes, who was also sent off at the weekend during Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 win over Real Zaragoza after his collision with Matteo Contini, has also been suspended for a single match.
