Real Madrid general manager Jorge Valdano has praised the "extraordianry resilience" of would-be coach Jose Mourinho and said that chosing the Portuguese over Manuel Pellegrini was an easy decision.
"We feel authorised to say that we want Mourinho and Mourinho will be part of Madrid next season because that is his intention and has already been expressed and now the coach has made the club," he told Onda Cero radio.
"He has a contract with Inter and there is also another type of agreement reached during the season that the parties involved must clarify.
"We want Real Madrid at the height of this trajectory, Real Madrid has to fight the best and fight for the leadership of European football and that is the purpose for which we [Florentino Perez's project] arrived a year ago and for which we keep working.
"He is a coach who has shown extraordinary resilience. He has played one way at Porto, another at Chelsea, and a different way in Italy. This is a super intelligent person an I am sure he will understand the country, the city an the club he arrives at, that is very important.
"We're not talking about the failure of Pellegrini, we are talking about the failure of a project and in it we are all committed. It is understood that strong leadership is needed and Mourinho represents that. It was easier to find a consensus around Mourinho than around Pellegrini and therefore the decision was made."
