With the international break keeping many of Real Madrid's star players occupied, the club have allowed coach Manuel Pellegrini to return to Chile to attend a family engagement.

On arriving in Santiago, Pellegrini was surrounded by journalists who were eager to know if the Chilean was suffering from the pressure of being in charge of los Blancos.

However, he insisted that he knew there would be heavy demands before he took the job and is confident he can lead los Merengues to success in the league and the Champions League.

"I know that there is always pressure at Real Madrid, but the criticisms don't affect me at all," he is quoted as saying by Marca.

"I was at Villarreal for five years and I saw what was happening with every Real Madrid coach, like [Fabio] Capello or [Bernd] Schuster. It's very difficult to be subjected to such questioning [of your abilities].

"The press have always been very demanding with Real Madrid. [But] we have an outstanding squad and are we working well. We are leading in the Champions League and are a point off Barcelona in the league."

Real Madrid face Racing Santander at the Santiago Bernabeu when the Primera Division resumes. A week later they travel to the Camp Nou to face Barcelona in 'el Clasico'.
