Coach Pep Guardiola switches Carles Puyol to a full-back role as he looks to counter the pace of French winger Jeremy Mathieu in the cup clash at MestallaBarcelona boss Pep Guardiola has left Xavi and Dani Alves on the bench for the Catalans' Copa del Rey semi-final first leg at Valencia on Wednesday night.
The coach saw his side troubled by the pace of Jeremy Mathieu in the sides' league encounter at Mestalla earlier on in the campaign, which ended 2-2, and has decided to switch Carles Puyol to a full-back position to counter the threat posed by the Frenchman.
That means Alves is on the sidelines along with Xavi, as Guardiola names Thiago, Sergio Busquets and Cesc Fabregas, who scored a late equaliser in the teams' league fixture, in midfield.
Jose Manuel Pinto starts in goal, as he has done through the competition.
Barcelona won the 2009 final at Mestalla under Guardiola with Pinto in goal, but lost at the same venue last season in the showpiece against Real Madrid.
