Manchester United Icon Ryan Giggs Hails 'Born Leader' Wayne Rooney
Welsh veteran waxes lyrical about 'unbelievable' team-mate...
By Mick Maguire
Rooney has come into his own this season at Old Trafford, filling the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo's departure last summer to become the Red Devils' talisman.
The Everton product has already struck 21 goals in all competitions this term, but his influence on the pitch stretches well beyond the opposition penalty area.
Giggs told Esquire magazine: "It's hard to [dominate games] when you're a centre-forward. You can't see the game from that position.
"But [Rooney's] got the capability purely because of his hunger, his desire and his intelligence. I'd say he's a born leader."
The Welshman, now in his 20th season at Old Trafford, couldn't help but drop a few famous names when analysing his on-field relationship with Rooney.
"I have been fortunate enough to be surrounded with good players throughout my career," Giggs said.
"In my younger days when I was quicker, if Eric [Cantona] got the ball I'd make a run. If Scholesy [Paul Scholes] got the ball, I'd make a run. If Becks [David Beckham] got the ball, I'd make a run. I knew they could deliver a pass. Now, it's the other way around because I deliver to the other players.
"If Wayne makes a run, I know where he is going more often than not because he's such an intelligent player. He shows me where to put the ball, rather than the other way round.
"He's got unbelievable physical attributes. He's strong, he's quick but he's also a very clever footballer."
