Report: John Terry Must Come Clean With Fabio Capello To Save England Captaincy
News of the World claims that John Terry's only hope of continuing as captain of his country is to reveal everything about his latest scandal to England manager Fabio Capello.
Terry's image has taken a battering this week with allegations of a sordid affair with the then-partner of Wayne Bridge, his national team-mate and one-time Chelsea chum.
With the World Cup looming, pundits across the country have called for the 29-year-old to give up the Three Lions armband in order to quell any unrest within the squad.
Now it has emerged that Terry will meet with Capello's assistant, Franco Baldini, within the next few days to discuss the situation.
If his telling of the tale is convincing, the Barking-born star could yet lead his country to South Africa; but if he seeks to hoodwink 'Don Fabio' in any fashion, his reign as captain will come to an end - or so it is claimed.
The FA also wants an explanation of events, but it is understood that Capello will have full control over what happens next.
Former England skipper Paul Ince has urged Italian to act swiftly, stressing that the situation will only become more embarrassing and harmful the longer it is left undealt with.
He wrote in his NOTW column: "[Capello] should be on the phone to Terry and Wayne Bridge, getting their sides of the story, gauging how each of them feels and what impact there will be on the squad if they have to share a dressing room, hotel and training ground for the duration of the World Cup.
"Thankfully, it sounds like Fabio is seeing it like that. Good, because not acting quickly could have dire consequences.
"Normally, stories like this fade after a week but this one will run and run.
"This isn't a case of a footballer stepping out of line, being caught and facing the consequences. This is about the betrayal of a friendship, of crossing a line that should never be crossed.
"And unless Fabio acts quickly, the aftermath will fester and eat away at the unity of the England squad. "
