Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has been granted indefinite compassionate leave after his wife Annemarie van Kesteren, 36, suffered a brain haemorrhage last week.

The 39-year-old Dutchman is now back in the Netherlands with his wife after she collapsed as the couple and their children were preparing to celebrate Christmas.

The keeper had returned to his homeland for treatment on a knee injury, and is now likely to be away from Old Trafford for a while.

"Annemarie had a problem over in Holland a week ago and has been admitted to hospital," Ferguson told reporters at a press conference today.

"That is the best place for her to be. They have examined her twice and are trying to get to the root of it.

"I have told Edwin to stay over there. There is no point in him being here. The best thing is for him to be with his wife. Hopefully she will make a good recovery."

Meanwhile, Gary Neville returns to the United squad for Tuesday night's clash with Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford.
