Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's recent revelation that experienced and versatile midfielder Ryan Giggs will be rewarded with an extension to his current contract has been well received by the 36-year-old.

Giggs, who recently became the latest recipient of the annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, beamed on the BBC: ''It was the first I had heard of it the other day so I was quite pleased.

"My contract ends at the end of the year but hopefully there will be another year after that.''

Should Giggs receive a one-year extension, it will guarantee a 20th full season in professional football, or 21 since he originally signed professional terms.

The Welshman has represented United an impressive 821 times, returning 151 goals.
