Manchester City's decision to sell Richard Dunne has been retrospectively deemed perplexing due to the sterling nature of the Irishman's performances at club-level with Aston Villa this season, but the defender believes City's rivals Manchester United have also suffered from the Cristiano Ronaldo sale.

"It’s going to count for any team, losing a player like Ronaldo," Dunne said after the Villans' 1-0 triumph over Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

"United created a lot of chances and dominated us for periods, but Brad Friedel wasn’t too busy.

"When he had to be, he was brilliant," Dunne said.

"It was good to see United start with just one up front, but we knew that, once we tired, they would put on the other two.

"It’s a great result, but you have to be careful," the centre-back added.

"When you start patting yourself on the back it can all come crashing down."

The victory propelled Villa up to fourth in the Premier League charts. They are eight points behind league leaders Chelsea, whom they have also beaten this season.
