Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is in no doubt that the Reds' opener in their win at Everton on Sunday should be credited to him.

The Argentine's speculative strike deflected off Toffees defender Jospeh Yobo – who was credited with an own goal – but Mascherano maintains that the goal is his.

"I think it's my goal because I tried to score with the shot," Mascherano said, according to Press Association Sport.

"It was a really important moment for me because I want to do my best."

As a holding midfielder Mascherano is not known for his scoring feats. Many supporters have been less than complimentary about his shooting recently, but the player believes that the goal shows that he is improving in that department.

"This season some people have criticised my shooting but I am trying hard to improve it and I am happy," he concluded.
