Liverpool Cannot Promise Top Four Finish - Lucas Leiva

Brazilian believes Reds could miss out on Champions League spots...

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has warned the club’s fans that the team cannot promise to finish in the top four this season.

A poor start to their campaign sees the Reds currently in seventh place in the Premier League and having already been knocked out of the Champions League and the League Cup.

Next up for Rafael Benitez’s side is a trip to Goodison Park to take on Everton in the Merseyside derby where a win for the Toffees would leave David Moyes’ men just two points behind their city rivals.

With the likes of Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City all having strengthened in the summer, the race to grab a Champions League spot for next season is hotting up and according to the Brazilian, that will make life difficult for the Reds.

“We are in a difficult moment and it's hard to know if we can be in the top four at the end of the season,” he told the Sunday People.

“We can't make promises about that - but we can promise the determination and commitment to try and make it happen.

"We will try as hard as we can, but we cannot promise.”

Liverpool make the short trip to Everton on Sunday hoping for their first league win since October, when they beat Manchester United.
