Everton Stadium Plans Halted By The Government - Report
Toffees want to move to 50,000 capacity stadium on the outskirts of Liverpool...
The government has scuppered Everton's plans to relocate to a new stadium on the outskirts of Liverpool.
The Toffees want to move to a new 50,000 capacity stadium in Kirkby, with the plan being that it would open in 2012.
Initial plans for the ground were submitted back in February 2007.
Knowsley Council then approved the plans in June last year but the Government called the project in.
Communities Secretary John Denham decided to reject the proposals of worries about supermarket chains taking business away from town and city centres.
The plans also included retail outlets and supermarkets on site.
Knowsley North and Sefton East MP George Howarth told the Liverpool Daily Post: "I deeply regret this decision in a time of significant economic challenge to the whole of Merseyside during a recession."
