Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has admitted that he made a mistake by mouthing "12 men" into the camera following the 1-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Red Devils still appear to be sour concerning the free-kick that was conceded by Darren Fletcher when the referee adjudged him to have fouled Ashley Cole. The set-piece ultimately resulted in a goal, but replays later indicated that the Scotland international had got the ball during the tackle.

"I probably should not have said it," said Rooney, according to the Press Association.

"I was disappointed at the end of the game and felt we deserved more out of it. Your emotions are high at the end.

"I felt we didn't get the decisions but that is the way it goes.

"It was probably our best performance of the season but it was a disappointing result."

Following the loss to the west London club, Sir Alex Ferguson's men are now five points adrift of Carlo Ancelotti's charges and sit in third place - behind Arsenal on goal difference.
