Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has admitted that Alberto Aquilani may get a taste of Anfield during the upcoming Premier League game against Birmingham City.

The former Roma player is on the comeback trail after ankle surgery in the summer and is unlikely to make the starting line-up, but he is reportedly in the squad to face Alex McLeish's side on Monday.

"His [Aquilani's] match fitness is still a problem," Benitez told the club's official website.

"We are hopeful of having some players fit and available so maybe he can wait and change the game if it's necessary."

Aquilani was an unused substitute during the Reds' recent draw with Olympique Lyonnais at the Stade Gerland, and Benitez admitted that he was reluctant to send in his blockbuster signing as his midfield was doing very well.

"We were controlling the game in Lyon and Lucas and Javier Mascherano were doing a very good job," he said.

"When we scored we didn't want to change the shape.

"Aquilani was better after his virus and could have played some part but hopefully now he will be better for Monday."
