John Obi Mikel Yet To Convince Carlo Ancelotti Of First-Team Credentials

Speculation surrounds future of 'Mikelele'...

EPL: John Obi Mikel - Niko Kranjcar, Portsmouth - Chelsea (PA)

Despite filling the role of defensive midfielder for a lion's share of last season, John Obi Mikel is yet to convince Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti that he is worthy of a first-team role in his midfield, and - according to a report in The People - he has begun a search to find another anchor.

The report indicates that the Italian is to oversee a scouting mission and recruitment drive, to find a body that can rival Michael Essien for a first team spot - now, or in the future.

A Goal.com report published earlier today highlighted the weekend speculation over the future of Everton starlet Jack Rodwell, with Chelsea said to be a likely destination for the versatile midfielder.

The Blues, though, may be prevented from entering the transfer market should a FIFA transfer embargo enforced due to the alleged "inducement" of Gael Kakuta be followed through.

Obi Mikel will be unavailable for club selection while the African Cup of Nations is competed in January. Nigeria are seeded into Pot 2 for the group stage draw - scheduled for November 30.
