Churchill Brothers won the Federation Cup for the very first time in their history as they defeated Sporting Club de Goa 3-1 in the final on Saturday.
Balwant Singh, Alesh Sawant and Abdelhamid Shabana were on the scoresheet for Churchill Brothers while Victorino Fernandes pulled one back for Sporting.
“I would like to congratulate Churchill Brothers for their Federation Cup victory particularly Mr Churchill Alemao who is responsible for his team clinching the prestigious title,” Shrinivas Dempo, the president of Goa Football Association (GFA) said.
Dempo, who also serves as one of the vice-president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), hailed Churchill's achievement of being the reigning Federation Cup and the I-League champions.
“It is definitely a proud moment for Goan football that a Goan club has managed to lift the Federation Cup. Churchill winning the I-League title last year and now the Federation Cup is indeed a double pride for all of us,” he added.
