Thangboi Singto: We need to work on our strengths

The Lajong boss says that his team still have a long way to go before making it into the semis...

Shillong Lajong had a dream start to their Federation Cup as they downed Salgaocar FC 4-0 in their group C opener.

Though the Goan club started brightly, they faded out soon and Lajong took control as they scored two in the first half, and two in the second to put the game to bed.

Seikhohao Tuboi (15'), Redeem Tlang (37'), Cornell Glen (49') and Taisuke Matsugae (62') got their names on the scoresheet for the winners.

Cornell Glen played well throughout the game and got himself on the scoresheet, scoring the final goal from outside the box when he sent his shot expertly into the corner.

"Yes, even though I scored, I think it was a great team performance, I think we stuck together as a team and kept the ball well and took our chances. We should have had more goals in the first half but I think the team played pretty well and if we play like this during the season, we have a great chance of finishing in the top two or three in the league’.

Glen was then asked on whether he would rather have been in Subhash Singh’s position when the latter missed a few chances, he said, “No, you know that’s the game. Once Subhash gets one-or-two goals, he's going to continue to score goals. His confidence is a bit down, but once he gets the goal and gets it out of his system, he is going to score more. Subhash is a good player and I have confidence in him.’

The experienced striker mentioned that it was easier to play on a grass pitch as it aided in understanding the bounce better.

"Definitely and it is much easier to play on a grass pitch and you can read the bounce of the ball much more easily. I enjoy the game a lot as we have good weather and pitch so obviously we get good football.’

Coach Thangboi Singto downplayed that they are placed in a tough group and said, “I wouldn’t really say it is the group of death as every team is tough. It’s just a win because still there is a long way to go. We need to keep on working on our strengths and weaknesses and go on from here.”

When asked if other teams in their group should worry about Lajong as their four goals was a statement of intent, Singto said, “Oh I did say it’s a tournament, on any given day anybody can beat anybody you know, so today we did well and we have to keep this up.”
