Armando Colaco: I-League is the priority for East Bengal

The Red and Gold won their fourth consecutive domestic league title after being crowned as the Kolkata league champions for a record 35th time...
East Bengal emerged champions of Calcutta Football League (CFL) when they defeated Kalighat MS 2-0 on their home ground, on Wednesday, making the derby match against Mohun Bagan on Saturday inconsequential for Armando Colaco.

The champions were put ahead by James Moga who tapped in a Cavin Lobo pass in the 23rd minute. Chidi Edeh, who came in as a second half substitute for Moga, converted a cross from Shylo Malswamtulunga to double the lead in the 76th minute while Ryuji Sueoka missed a penalty in the injury time.

“I am very happy to win the CFL. The Calcutta League is very different, it’s very special. It is full of emotions. I know the derby between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan is on Saturday, but for me now that is just another match. We have already won the league,” East Bengal coach, Armando Colaco, told Kolkata Daily The Telegraph.

“They (East Bengal players) are the champions. They deserve all the credit. I have tried to be a friend to them, more than just a coach, and maybe that has helped to bring the positives back in the team,” added Colaco, who is set to visit his hometown before Saturday's clash.

There were wild scenes of jubiliation following the final whistle, as the Goan explained, “I was almost injured in the frenzied celebrations on the ground after the match, but that is the price of success. If this is what the fans feel after a CFL win, I can only imagine what may happen if we win the I-League.”

“We (East Bengal) have not won the I-League. So that is a priority now,” the former Dempo SC coach went on to state the obvious as the team gears up for the Federation Cup in which they are grouped alongwith Bengaluru FC, Rangdajied United FC and Sporting Clube de Goa in cluster B.
