Pune FC lost to East Bengal 2-1 in a closely fought tie held at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. This leave the so-called “Group Of Death” interestingly poised with Pune FC, Dempo and East Bengal all now having a chance to qualify for the semi-final.
Derrick Pereira spoke to the media after the match and was visibly disappointed with the result.
On the final outcome the Pune FC coach stated, “We are little unlucky considering the fact that Subrata Paul and Mandjou Keita had to be taken off due to injuries, so thats two forced changes and then Chika Wali played with an injury for the last twenty minutes and thus we were virtually playing with ten.”
The former Mahindra United coach complimented East Bengal on their performance and felt that the squad depth was the difference between the two teams.
“We knew they would come at us strong in this game. They are a good side and played really well, so we can't complain about that. The difference in the depth of the two squads was also evident as their coach could make six changes and still have a strong team.”
The coach also took stock of the injury problems in his squad as he stands to miss out on the services of three key players. He emphasized, “Paul has suffered an injury on his knee and we have to wait for the scan report. But its a serious injury so he is likely to be out of Mohammedan game along with Chika and Keita”
The Goan though is still hopeful of his chances to progress from the group. He said, “It is out of our hands now but we will try to win our next game.”
