Federation Cup: We Missed Our Foreigners - Lajong Coach Stanley Rosario
The Shillong Lajong coach lamented the absence of their two foreigners…
Their coach Stanley Rosario said that the suspension of foreigners Daniel Bedemi and James Gbilee forced him to go for such a strategy.
Speaking to Goal.com he said, “Foreigners are very important in Indian football so it was unfortunate that we missed both Daniel and James in a big final.
“That is why I opted for a much more defensive game plan and so we were limited to very few attacks. I give full credit to East Bengal but the absence of our foreigners did make a huge difference.”
It was yet another penalty shootout heartbreak for Stanley in the Federation after the semi-final defeat at the hands of Mohun Bagan in 2008, when he was in charge of the red and gold brigade.
He stated that nobody can be blamed for losing a shootout and praised his players for putting in a fighting performance.
“See anything is possible in a shootout so I cannot blame the players who couldn’t convert their spotkicks.
“We fought bravely for 120 minutes without our foreigners and stopped a full strength East Bengal side from scoring. Therefore I am very happy with the performance of my players.”
The former Salgaocar coach said that the good showing in the Federation Cup will hopefully give his side the confidence to improve their I-League position but feels it will be a different task since it’s not a knockout tournament.
“I am hopeful that the Federation Cup performance will give us the boost to improve in the I-League. But I can’t set any targets now because it’s not a knockout tournament so we have to prepare a little differently.”
Finally he praised striker Seikhokhao Tuboi and tipped him to play for the national team in the near future. But he also pointed out that it will be up to him and the Lajong management to make sure that the 20 year old striker doesn’t get distracted by offers from big clubs.
“Tuboi is a very talented boy and I think he has the potential to make it big for the national team also. I think he is very close to be in the Under-23 side but for that he needs to keep performing.
“He was brilliant in the Federation Cup so naturally the big clubs will be approaching him.
“I have already made the management aware about that possibility and personally I have also spoken to him and told him to stay focused on performing well on the pitch and not to get distracted by all these,” he concluded.
