Dempo came up with their best performance to beat Air India 2-0 and send them out of the tournament. Shillong Lajong have won the group and reached their first ever semi finals in their very first appearance in the Federation Cup.

With ND Opara missing from the Air India ranks, they had to resort to ground passing however the front two of Air India, Tapan Maity and Dada Nabeel were doing a good job of stretching the Dempo defence.

The Goan side too were attacking fluently with Joaquim Abranches particularly looking very lively.

Air India dominated the possession in the early part of the game as both teams continuously attacked with gusto. However they struggled to hold the ball up front in Opara’s absence.

Kailash Patil got himself into a shooting position but did not manage to get a shot on target.

The first goal came on the 22nd minute against the run of play as Air India’s defence went to sleep. A cross from the left was met by an incoming Carvalho with no one challenging him.

The Air India team suddenly started to fall apart after the goal and as the first half came to a close Dempo were all over the Airmen.

The second half started much like the first, with both teams attacking. Dempo were able to keep the ball better as stalwarts such as Climax Lawrence and Anthony Pereira started to stamp their authority on the game.

Yusuf Ibrahim was having a quiet game in midfield and Air India were struggling to find rhythm.

Patil was working the Dempo defence well and a few great through balls from Yusuf saw him get behind the defence but the Air India striker was unable to find a teammate in the box.

And just when it seemed that the game was bound to end as it was, Dempo doubled their lead.

Harpreet Singh was substituted as he twisted his ankle and Syed Fareed came on. With his very first touch he was robbed off the ball by Pereira who fed Abranches whose first time shot was well saved by Sawant however the rebound fell kindly to Abranches again.

The India Under-23 striker cut back for Climax Lawrence who put the ball into the empty net.

Armando Colaco's team held on for their first win and eliminated Air India from the tournament. Meanwhile, Shillong Lajong have qualified for the semi finals as Group D winners and will take on Churchill Brothers in the first semi final.
