Group C Comment: Day One Was Surprising...

Goal.com looks back at the results of matchday one of the Federation Cup...

Surprise! Surprise! Don’t take Mumbai FC lightly or you’ll pay the price! If you have any doubts please ask Sporting Clube De Goa. And why not?

The Goan side started better and deservedly took the lead before the half hour mark through Nathaniel Amos. This awoke the until then sleeping Mumbai FC side to begin their resurgence and equalise before the break thanks to the ever improving Dane Pereira.

It wasn’t that Sporting played bad but it was the stupidity of Fulganco Cardozo which cost them dear as his challenge on Nishant Mehra earned him a red card, with over 25 minutes to go in the game.

Mumbai FC made the most of the advantage they were given and scored the winner when Subhas Chakraborty slotted past a hapless Luis Barreto.

Sporting’s chances of making into the next round are dim as they shall pin their hopes on winning their next two matches against HAL and Churchill and pray that the I-League champions win against Mumbai FC. Sounds unlikely!

On current form, Churchill Brothers are the favourites in the group as they thrashed HAL 3-0 in their opening game. Goals from Khan Thang Paite, who was having a rough patch this season, and Odafa Okolie propelled them to top the table.

They could have made the scoreline even worse for the Bangloreans but were spendthrift with their chances upfront. Churchill continued to be mean at the back as they kept a clean sheet after having conceded the least number of goals in the I-League so far. No wonder all their defenders and the goalkeeper are part of the national set-up!

Matchday three of the Federation Cup throws HAL versus Sporting while Churchill faces Mumbai FC. For HAL to make it, they’ll have to win their next two matches against Sporting and Mumbai FC and hope that Mumbai FC beat Churchill as well.

So it’s primarily between Mumbai FC and Churchill Brothers. The two did meet in the I-League earlier this season with Abhishek Yadav scoring a penalty late into the second half injury time, a decision which left the Goan side miffed as they believe too much time was added on, helped Mumbai FC come away with a point.

Last season too when the two teams met, Mumbai FC drew away with a 2-2 scoreline while at home, they lost 3-2, a result which was later pointed by Odafa Okolie as one of the most crucial turnarounds in the title race.

All this points that we have a game in hand on Wednesday and the result of the game will be crucial in determining the winner of Group C.
