The Mohun Bagan centre-back got injured during the Nehru Cup but returned nine months later in the SAFF Cup.

“After missing out on action for a long time, I returned directly to the international arena during the SAFF Cup. But I feel that this tournament is the opportune moment where I come back and be at my best.”

Deepak was nominated for the prestigious Arjuna Awards alongwith Mahesh Gawli, Climax Lawrence and Renedy Singh. Ask him how he feels and the experienced defender smiles saying, “Who wouldn’t be honoured for being nominated for the Arjuna Award?

“Every sportsperson in India dreams of winning it someday or at least be considered for the award. I am very pleased and my parents are equally happy.”

Reflecting on the Portugal tour, Deepak said, “It’s always a good experience to get exposure in countries like Portugal. It was a lot of learning and fun.”
