Another season is going to pass for Florentino Perez’s ‘Neo-Galaticos’ era with nothing more than a Copa Del Rey title to show for at the end of it. However, this can be considered as a nice consolation for Madrid as they earned the trophy by beating arch-rivals Barcelona, in their only win in the recent series of clasicos.
Real Madrid did find themselves second best in the two of the three competitions that both the Spanish giants were involved in. However if Madrid would have won their league games in which they dropped points other than the two ties against Barca, then they could have made the La Liga title race even more exciting.
Many people believe that hiring Jose Mourinho last season was a huge step in overtaking Barca but they need to take a few more to actually do so.
Attack A Little More
The Real Madrid side which Manuel Pellegrini was in charge of, was known for its attacking mentality keeping in mind the demands of the Bernabeu faithful of watching beautiful attractive football. However with Jose Mourinho at the helm, a defensive and counter attacking mentality was seen from the Real Madrid side not only against Barcelona but in matches against other teams also.
However in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final, even though Mourinho’s side didn’t see the ball as much as they would have liked, they did try to attack a lot more. The game would still be best remembered for Iniesta’s killer pass and Barcelona’s progress to the final, but Real Madrid can certainly take a lot of positives from their attitude and overall performance in that game.
Buy One More World Class Central Defender
An attacking side also needs proper defenders too. Ricardo Carvalho’s signing last summer proved vital in Real Madrid’s improvement this season. But his regular central defensive partner Pepe is not as consistent as the former Chelsea defender and more worryingly continues to have a very poor disciplinary record.
Although the partnership of Pepe and Ricardo Carvalho is a strong one, Real could possibly have one more world class central defender in their squad and thus have more options in that department as Raul Albiol is not totally reliable. Also the fact that Pepe has flourished as a central defensive midfielder in the clasicos, should make Mourinho consider bringing another world class central defender in the squad.
Sign More Spanish Players
Who can understand the rivalry of Madrid and Barcelona better than the Spanish players themselves? Although this might sound awkward to many people as nationality never should be decisive in sport. But having a few more Spanish players could benefit Real in their duels with Barca both in head-to-head clashes and over the course of the season.
It’s worth nothing that Barca are still looking to add more Spanish internationals to their team like Fabregas, Mata, Llorente etc. Real already have the likes of Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa and maybe a few more Spanish names will make them even stronger.
Retain Jose Mourinho
Jose Mourinho has only managed to win the Copa Del Rey and even saw his proud nine year unbeaten home domestic league record end in his first season as Real Madrid manager. And of course he was criticized on numerous occasions for his defensive approach.
But there is no doubt that he has brought Real a lot closer to Barca especially since the 5-0 hammering in November last year at the Camp Nou and who knows what would have happened if Pepe would not have got the red card in first leg. The only way to find out if the Portuguese can complete the job of overtaking Barca is to give him another chance and his incredible track record certainly makes him deserve another season at least.
