I-League: We've Not Won Anything Yet - Ishfaq Ahmed
Mohun Bagan left winger Ishfaq Ahmed says that although they have now won ten league matches in a row, they have yet to win the title and have to maintain focus.
Bagan defeated fellow Kolkata side Mohammedan Sporting 1-0 in the I-League at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday to register their tenth successive league victory.
Reflecting on the match, Bagan left winger Ishfaq Ahmed told Goal.com, "We played well in the match. We scored an early goal and we had the ability to soak the pressure. The defence and the goalkeeper played well.
"We usually believe in getting results. We are in such a situation that we cannot afford any slip-up."
This was Bagan's first victory over Mohammedan in four attempts this season and Ahmed was understandably relieved.
"Thankfully we have defeated almost all the teams this season. Thanks to God for that.
“But we have not won anything yet. Still there are a lot to achieve. We should maintain our run as even a single match in this league can make a difference."
Ishfaq Ahmed, though, had a few good words about Mohammedan's performance against them at the weekend and said, "Mohammedan played well and made life difficult for us. They raised their game and if they continue to perform like they did against us, then they wouldn’t get relegated."
Mohun Bagan's next league match is against East Bengal on Sunday. This time the Kolkata derby should be quite a competitive affair as East Bengal have started winning matches under Subhash Bhowmick.
Looking ahead to the Kolkata derby, Ahmed said, "We know how derby matches are. Players raise their game during derbies.
"East Bengal are out of the running for the I-League but they are not fighting against relegation this season. So they will play for pride as they know that defeating us will be a huge achievement for them.”
