Player Ratings: Manchester United 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur (4-1 pens)
The Red Devils are on course for the quadruple, edging the holders from the spot in a tightly contested encounter at Wembley. Goal.com's Sulmaan Ahmad rates the players...
Foster (7): A commanding presence. Made one great save from Aaron Lennon in the second half.
O'Shea (5): Looked a little overwhelmed at times. Clumsy in possession and duly withdrawn towards the end of the game.
Ferdinand (7): Made some good blocks and led his defence with aut
Evans (8): Another 'no fuss' performance from the young Irishman, who even adapted fairly well to being put at right-back late on. Didn't really put a foot wrong.
Evra (6): Not often is Patrice Evra outdone by any winger, let alone one who has long been tagged an underachiever such as Aaron Lennon. Perhaps fatigued from his exceptional exploits midweek, the Frenchman was second best to Lennon, but improved once he was replaced.
Ronaldo (7): A lively presence throughout. His final touch was not as it has been, but his running and movement made him a constant menace. Kept his cool from the spot, with a trademark stammered run up.
Scholes (7): Pin-point passing executed to perfection from the first until the last minute. His only flaw is nature taking its toll as he began to tire late in the day.
Gibson (5): Started with good enough intentions, but began being overran as the game progressed and Spurs put up more of a fight. Withdrawn at full-time with the game still goalless.
Nani (7): Like Ronaldo on the other flank, Nani always looked like causing trouble when running with the ball, but was somewhat lacking in end product.
Tevez (6): Full of running, but unable to really create any danger. Struck his penalty home with ease.
Welbeck (5): Had a promising campaign throughout the tournament, but was unable to shine on the big stage. He moved well up front, but his touch in and around goal was not good enough on the rare occasions he got good service.
Substitutes
Anderson (7): Full of energy and used the ball well around the box. Struck the winning penalty with such assuredness that he has always lacked in front of goal.
Vidic (7): Came on to shore up the defence and, as always, made great blocks while also marking very well.
Giggs (6): Unable to really nail down a position and assert himself on proceedings. Took a good penalty.
Tottenham Hotspur
Gomes (7): Assured and blunder-free, to the relief on Spurs fans. Made many saves, most of which were straigtforward, and thus there can be no cause for complaint.
Corluka (7): Had his good and bad moments in an intriguing battle with Nani. Often looked stretched, but grew more assured as the game went on. Stayed cool from the spot.
Dawson (7): Put his physical presence to good use in ensuring that Welbeck never got the better of him. Put in good challenges and clearances.
King (7): A solid performance at the back, in which he was rarely beaten by the United front line.
Assou-Ekotto (7): Was really made to work by Cristiano Ronaldo, but did well to stay in the game and not let the Portuguese get away from home.
Lennon (8): An outstanding showing from the Spurs winger. His pace and dribbling were simply electrifying and he was impossible to contain. Tracked back well to help out in defence and his final ball, though not great, was often teasing and testing the United defence. Withdrawn in extra time when he finally ran out of energy.
Zokora (8): Very busy and a decent outlet in midfield. Showed immense stamina to cover so much ground for the entire 120 minutes.
Jenas (8): Worked tirelessly box-to-box and did well to keep pace with the end-to-end nature of the game. Substituted in extra time.
Modric (7): Saw a lot of the ball but did not quite do enough with it. Good, but not great from the Croatian. Central to many of Spurs' chances, but couldn't quite make that moment of magic it would take to win the day.
Bent (5): Just lacking. Failed to really trouble any of United's defenders and barely got off any shots.
Pavlyuchenko (4): Arguably the striker of the tournament going into today's final, but had a wretched outing today, with his shots going all over the place and having wasted possession far too often.
Substitutes
O'Hara (7): As always, he put in 100 per cent and always made good runs. Put himself about to great effect.
Bale (7): Asked questions of United on the break in a sprightly display full of direct running.
Bentley (4): Lacking the pace of Lennon and unable to make up for it with any kind of invention. Spurs were mostly looking to consolidate once he came on, thus limiting his impact. Put his penalty wide and all but ruined Spurs' chances of winning the shootout.
