The 26-year-old has endured a frustrating campaign at Camp Nou in 2013-14, with his own injury problems compounded by Barca's failure to land a trophy aside from the Spanish Supercopa at the start of the season.
Messi's future has long been the subject of speculation as talks over a new contract dragged on throughout much of the campaign, but Barca announced at the end of last week that that they had finally reached an agreement with the Argentina star over an improved deal.
However, while Messi insists his desire is to stay with the club he joined as a youngster, he suggested he could consider his options should attitudes towards him change in Catalunya.
"I've always said I'm very happy to stay at my home," he posted on his official Weibo account.
"This year hasn't gone as expected and it wasn't one of my best, but I'm convinced that next year will be different, as it will be for the team.
"It's the people at Barcelona who decide what to do with my future, but my choice is to stay, as I still feel the same affection from them, but if that isn't the case I'll look for a solution."
Barca's 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid on Saturday saw them surrender their Liga title to Diego Simeone's men, before coach Gerardo Martino confirmed he was leaving his post immediately after the game.
Messi, who was embroiled in a tax evasion case midway through the season, admits it was a difficult year for him both on and off the pitch and apologised to Barca fans that they were unable to defend their domestic crown on the final day.
"Things didn't turn out as we had expected. It was a tough year personally and collectively," he said.
"Despite this, we had the chance to achieve an objective in the last game and we were unable to take advantage of it. I can only say sorry to all the Barcelona fans and promise them that next year we'll meet the demands of this club again."
