The spry defender impressed in delivering consistent performances for both club and country in October, becoming the third Japanese player to win the honours this year

Yuto Nagatomo has been declared Goal.com's Asian Player of the Month for October by both Goal.com's staff and readership.

The 25-year-old attack-minded defender is traditionally a left back, but has often played on the left or right wing for Andrea Stramaccioni's side. After starting in Inter's 2-1 win against Fiorentina, Nagatomo's season hit a low note when he saw a red card early in the second half of his club's 1-0 derby conquest at AC Milan.

Less than one week later he shook away his bad day at San Siro to deliver a stunning performance at the Stade de France, playing fiercely on both sides of the ball and delivering the winning assist to Shinji Kagawa in Japan's shock 1-0 win against France. He could not repeat the effort days later, however, when Japan fell 0-4 to Brazil.

Nagatomo returned to action for Inter at the end of the month, playing steadily in Inter's 3-1 win at Bologna. His play has undoubtedly contributed to Inter's undefeated league run, which currently stands at seven matches.

In polls held across Goal.com's Asian editions readers also recognized Hamburg's Son Heung-Min, who scored two game-winning goals in October.

While Goal.com's Asian Best XI garnered from our readers, our bench selection gained the attention of one player.

"Although it was only a bench place, it's helpful for my confidence," Jiangtsu Sainty midfielder Ji Xiang told Goal.com China. "It means I haven't done well enough. There are still some places I need to improve, and I hope I can be selected in the [ABXI] in the future."
