thumbnail Hello,

Join Goal.com for another global player worthy of recognition...

Welcome to Goal.com's regular feature: Goal.com World Player of the Week. Each week our worldwide team of editors will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by Goal.com International, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday. It won't necessarily be the best player in the world - at least not usually - but whoever we nominate will have done something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...

Goal.com World Player of the Week #24: Marek Hamsik
Club: Napoli
Country: Slovakia
Age: 22
Role: Midfielder
Achievement: Inspiring the Vesuviani to a memorable league win over Juventus.

One of the more positive aspects of Slovakia's qualification to the World Cup finals is the fact that Marek Hamsik will find a global stage on which to showcase his undoubted talent.

Without Champions League football and plying his trade for a Napoli side unlikely to trouble the top spots in Serie A just yet, Hamsik's interventions are usually available exclusively to Calcio audiences.

However, next summer, that will all change. The world will find out all about Marek Hamsik and will be clued into what Calcio fans already know. The 22-year-old is rapidly developing into one of the best offensive midfielders in the world.

The former Brescia star was at the centre of the Partenopei's fight back win against no less an opposition than Juventus at the weekend.

Scoring twice, Hamsik epitomised the grit and spirit now contained within the ranks of Walter Mazzari's side. Two comeback results in a week, against some of Italy's most storied teams, have helped to steady the Neapolitan ship and set them in good stead for the immediate scrap in Serie A.

With Hamsik at the helm, both Napoli and Slovakia may achieve a lot.

Congratulations to Marek, our 24th Goal.com World Player of the Week!

A star in the making

Honourable Mentions:

1. Gonzalo Higuain - Real Madrid and Argentina

The striker continues to outshine the expensive summer arrivals with his tremendous form for los Merengues. Higuain scored another two goals last weekend, this time as Madrid re-aligned their form with a win over Getafe.

2. Demy de Zeeuw - Ajax and Netherlands

After surviving a pit of hate against his former club, AZ, last week the Dutch international was on hand to lead the Amsterdam side to a most comprehensive derby win over Feyenoord on Sunday. De Zeeuw, whose place in the line-up was in doubt due to flu, orchestrated proceedings and netted a brace for himself in a 5-1 win.

3. Cesc Fabregas - Arsenal and Spain

It's always nice to beat your local rivals, even nicer when they offer you the type of charity given to Cesc to score Arsenal's second goal against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Notwithstanding that abysmal defending, Fabregas was on hand to command his troops with a convincing and passionate display.

5. Fred - Fluminense and Brazil

The Brazil international was on hand to provide his club with a platform from which to overhaul Cruzeiro at the weekend. Trailing 2-0 away from home, 'Flu' were able to fight back to achieve victory thanks in large to Fred's interventions.

Leave your notes of congratulations for Marek below, or discuss who else deserves a place in the sun this week...
