Brunei Darussalam, officially the State of Brunei, is a country located on the north coast of the island of Borneo, in Southeast Asia. Apart from its coastline with the South China Sea it is completely surrounded by the state of Sarawak, Malaysia, and in fact it is separated into two parts by Limbang, which is part of Sarawak. Brunei, the remnant of a very powerful sultanate, regained its independence from the United Kingdom on 1 January 1984.

The Pakistan-Brunei clash came into view when the draw for the event’s  qualifiers threw up a handful of nail-biting encounters. AFC received a total of 17 entries for the third edition of the competition and the AFC Competitions Committee decided that the last two teams according to the FIFA rankings in the list would play off for a spot in the qualification.

This pits Macau against Mongolia in a two-legged play-off, whose first leg will be hosted by Macau on 7 March, 2009. The return leg takes place in Mongolia on 14 March, with the winner joining the qualification battle. In the draw proper, Pakistan will face Brunei Darussalam as well as Sri lankla, Chinese Taipei in Group D. The winners of four qualifying groups and the best runners-up will join Challenge Cup holders India, Tajikistan and North Korea in the 2010 Challenge Cup finals.

The Football Federation of Brunei Darussalam is the governing body of football in Brunei Darussalam, controlling the Brunei national team.It was founded 2008 after the deregistration of Football Association of Brunei Darussalam .

BAFA was founded in 1956, and has been a member of FIFA since 1969 and the Asian Football Confederation since 1970. Brunei's experience of international football has been more or less restricted to regional Asian competitions, such as the South East Asian Games and the Tiger Cup.
