Roma captain Francesco Totti has said Argentina would have been worthy World Cup winners as he offers his assessment on the tournament.

The Albiceleste were dumped out by Germany in the quarter-finals, but Totti feels they should have gone all the way.

"I want to salute Diego Maradona because for me he has been, and always will be, football," he told Il Corriere dello Sport.

"I would have wanted to see Argentina triumph in the World Cup seeing the passion with which they started.

"I am very sorry to have seen them go out."

It's back to business for Totti and Roma, who start their Riscone di Brunico ritiro on Tuesday.

"We are ready to start off on the right foot, hoping we can give our fans plenty of happy times," he said.
