World Cup 2010: Carlos Marchena Feels Luck Will Be On Spain's Side In The Final

Defender believes stopping Holland's quick attack is key
Carlos Marchena insists Spain’s unlucky streak at World Cup tournaments will come to an end in Sunday’s final.

Spain’s previous best effort was a fourth-placed finish in the 1950 Finals and subsequent sides have always failed to deliver on the world’s biggest stage.

"I believe the history of football owes us this one," Marchena told a press conference.

"There have been great moments in our history where fortune did not end up on our side.

"We have been through several great disappointments over the years. We tried hard then, but without any luck.

"Perhaps this time we are to change those bitter moments. I hope Sunday is one of those beautiful moments, which are to be remembered in a good way for the rest of our lives."

The Valencia defender has only appeared as a substitute in South Africa due to the high-level performances of Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique, but Marchena maintains Spain have been the best side throughout the tournament.

"There have been great national teams before, but this team is the one that has been able to be the best 'team'," he said.

"This is how it has managed to get where it is and it's a great credit to our players.

"In this moment, we're making up for all those bitter moments we've suffered.

"We know the expectations are huge here and in Spain. Hopefully the best times are to come."

The 30-year-old claims he and his team-mates will be ready for the Dutch on Sunday, highlighting that the key to success is to suppress Holland’s fast-paced attack.

"They have many strengths as we have seen throughout the World Cup. They defend very well and are a pretty complete team, with a great goalkeeper and midfielders that can create plenty of space," he continued.

"The first thing is to stop their strong attack and then play our game.

"Their forwards are also very clever. They are quick and are capable of some deadly counter-attacks. So yes, they are a very complete team, but we will be prepared."
