World Cup 2010: Paul Is Just An Octopus - Spain's Carlos Marchena
The aging veteran has lauded the new generation of Spanish internationals for their selflessness...
Spain centre-back Carlos Marchena has praised the young generation of Spanish players for being the "first to truly play as a team".Marchena assured that Spain would give everything to emerage as victors in the 2010 World Cup final against the Netherlands.
"We are going for more. We have never lived something like this before and we want to enjoy these moments to their fullest," he was quoted as saying by Marca.
As for Holland, Marchena praised the Dutch team for their defensive strengths and ability to play together.
"They defend very well. They are a complete team with a great goalkeeper. In the centre of the pitch, they have players who are able to threaten".
In Marchena's view, the reason Spain have become so successful on the international stage in recent years is simple: "We have been able to become a team. There have been great national teams, but this ist he first that has become a team, and that has allowed us to make it this far. We are witnessing history, but the best is yet to come".
Marchena also believes the national team owes a debt to Spanish fans everywhere for the unjust disappointments suffered over the past century. "There were huge disappointments without much sense to them, but now we have changed our fortune and I hope that Sunday can be a moment for us all to remember."
In commenting about the clairvoyant Paul the octopus who has been predicting Spanish victories, Marchena responded nonchalantly. "It's an octopus".
Finally, when asked to compare Spain's play with that of Barcelona, Marchena opined that "having Barcelona players always helps because they are some of the best in the world and they understand one another. It's a pleasure to play with these kind of players".
