Attendances for World Cup 2010 will race past the three million mark in tonight's semi-final between Spain and Germany - only the third time in the tournament's history this figure has been reached

FIFA announced today that total attendances so far have been 2.997 million for the 61 games, with an average of 49,134. This total is only bettered by USA '94 - which drew a record 3.59 million - and Germany 2006 - with 3.36 million.

Speaking to the press today, spokesman Nicolas Maingot declared the result a resounding success." He said: "Here in South Africa it is only the third time in the history of the World Cup that we will have passed 3 million.

Maingot also confirmed that attendance at fan parks across South Africa and the rest of the world would top 5 million after this evening's clash.
