World Cup 2010: Uruguay Coach Oscar Tabarez Proud That His Players Fought Until The End

The 63-year-old was generous in defeat...

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez was disappointed after the Celeste were knocked out of the World Cup but accepted that they had lost to a better team.

The two-time former World Cup winners went down 3-2 to the Netherlands in the semi-finals in Cape Town on Tuesday evening. It was the Celeste's first appearance in the last-four in 40 years and was hailed as great run by all observers.

Tabarez accepted the defeat with grace and also hailed his players for giving their nation a great World Cup run.

If we had to choose a way to lose it would have been this way," Tabarez said, according to Reuters. "This was another opportunity for us to show Uruguay's intentions, to play as equals over and above our limitations. Saturday's match (third-place game against either Germany or Spain) is important to us in that sense.

"When we look back, we can say we were among the four semi-finalists, the other three are powerhouses of Europe."

Looking back at the Netherlands' game, Tabarez said that he thought the second goal was offside but still accepted defeat with grace.

"I believe we could have put this team that played against us (Netherlands) in difficulty at any point.

"I'm proud of the team. They've played on an equal footing with the other team. You couldn't ask for more from these players.

"We accept the defeat, our rivals were better in front of goal. I knew the Dutch footballers were rich technically, who could score at any moment.

"Now we have seen the second goal was offside and the match could have been different for us... They gained in composure.

"The (Dutch) team has an attacking spirit, one of the best in this tournament but we never gave up and our last goal showed we were trying until the end."
