Pick Your Team Special: England And Liverpool Great John Barnes Says Jermain Defoe And James Milner Deserve To Start Against Germany

Fabio Capello should stick to winning formula

By Amar Singh in Johannesburg

England and Liverpool legend John Barnes today called on Fabio Capello to stick with his winning team, and give James Defoe and James Milner the chance to shine against Germany.

Barnes, who won 79 caps, has been picking his England team exclusively for, throughout the 2010 World Cup - and with Sunday's second round clash with bitter rivals Germany looming, he believes that Capello most keep faith in the men that delivered the win against Slovenia last week.

He said: "I know I have been calling for Wayne Rooney to play as a lone striker for the last two matches with Gerrard behind him. But I think Fabio Capello's changes for the Slovenia match worked and he should rightfully stick with his winning team. Jermain Defoe and James Milner were excellent and deserve to start again.

But Barnes said Fabio Capello's decision not to take an out and out defensive midfielder to the World Cup could haunt him.

"We don't have much of a choice in the area of defensive midfield. I still feel Steven Gerrard can do this job better than Barry or Carrick but obviously we need him further up field.

"We really need to start producing more defensive midfielders like Gilberto Silva or Javier Mascherano in our country - it's a position that is growing more and more important in world football."

The 46-year-old who represented England at the 1986 and 1990 World Cups is in the South Africa to promote MARS, the official England snack supplier, and is a pundit on local broadcaster SABC.

Barnes added: "England have a fantastic chance against a very young and inexperienced German side. Yes they play with flair and creativity and could cause us some problems, but England can get at their defence and win this match. I am feeling confident."

Do you agree with the line-up selected by Barnes? Let us know who you think should start for England in the comment box below...

David James
Barnes says: "Another solid performance against Slovenia.
He will be tested more by the lively Germans."

Glen Johnson

"Got forward a lot against Slovenia. Will need to have his defensive brain on against the Germans."

Matthew Upson

"I think Capello will stick with him. Not much between him and Carragher, so not a massive decision.

John Terry

"Put an eventful week behind him with strong display against Slovenia."

Ashley Cole

"Got forward more and linked up well with Gerrard. Good understanding growing between them.

James Milner

"Excellent display - he worked hard and got his crosses in. Has earned another start."

Frank Lampard

"Beginning to get forward more and play one-twos. Can cause Germany problems."

Gareth Barry

"Barry was not brilliant against Slovenia but will get the nod as he is more defensive than Michael Carrick."

Steven Gerrard

"Great performance against Slovenia He is so important for England now."

Wayne Rooney

"Wayne's looking much better now. He made some good decisions, playing it simple at times and benefiting from England not firing long balls up top. A goal can't be far off for Wayne."

Jermain Defoe

"He's a goal scorer and must be confident after Slovenia match. He can get at the German centre-backs who aren't the quickest."
