Goal.com editors voted the Portuguese midfielder as the man of the match against North Korea....Goal.com Editors' Top of the Match Sponsored By Turkish Airlines: Raul Meireles (Portugal)
Portugal struggled to find the back of the net in the the first half, being up by just one goal at half-time, but things got much easier when they added a second on 53 minutes as it inspired them to score five more before the final whistle. Meireles was once again pivotal for the Seleccao and he proved once again he is hot in front of goal for his national team.
With Deco out through injury, it was up to Meireles and Tiago to support Portugal in the centre of the midfield, and the Porto man pulled off an impressive display, scoring an important first goal for his team. He also helped set up Simao Sabrosa's strike in the second half and could have scored his second of the match in the 63rd minute, but his effort went off target.
Meireles would be replaced by Miguel Veloso 20 minutes before full time, and though he still missed three goals, his role in the victory was well stamped.
Goal.com Fans' Top of the Match Sponsored By Turkish Airlines: Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
However, Goal.com readers didn’t agree with our editors’ choice and voted Cristiano Ronaldo as their man of the match. Indeed, the Real Madrid superstar was in scintillating form on Monday afternoon against North Korea as he scored his first goal of the competition and also hit the woodwork for the second time in the World Cup with a long-distance shot.
Ronaldo was anonymous in the first half as he failed to turn on the style but after the interval the world’s most expensive footballer demonstrated just why he won the Balon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year in 2008. The former Manchester United was also at the heart of two goals.
