World Cup 2010: Fernando Torres Participates In Spain Training Session
The explosive striker looks to be in contention for a starting berth by proving his fitness...
By Paul Macdonald
Fernando Torres has came through a training session with Spain unscathed today, and has put himself in contention to face Poland in La Roja’s final friendly before the tournament in South Africa.
Vicente del Bosque’s side face the Poles on Tuesday evening, the coach’s last opportunity to experiment with his players and formulate his starting eleven for their opening match against Switzerland on 16 June.
Liverpool striker Torres was thought to be a major doubt for the first two group matches through injury, but his participation in today’s training session has boosted his chances of being fully fit for the big kick-off.
There were smiles and applause from those in attendance and the player himself looked delighted to be joining his colleagues. The 26-year old has been the major injury doubt, and has not seen action for several weeks, but his reappearance should act as a major boost to the squad with the commencement of the tournament on 11 June.
Elsewhere in the session, Barcelona defender Gerard Pique gave cause for concern by receiving a blow to the knee, but after brief consultation with the team doctors he was able to rejoin a bounce match without too much discomfort.
