thumbnail Hello,

Toni fancies England for glory...

Luca Toni has backed England to win the World Cup as he shows bitterness at being left out of the Italy squad by Marcello Lippi.

Toni, who returned to Serie A with Roma to boost his chances of a World Cup appearance, was omitted from the provisional Azzurri squad when Lippi announced it last month.

And he is frustrated with the decision, so much so that he wants England, not Italy, to win the trophy.

"I never heard from Lippi again. I am sad and I will miss my team-mates. I believed in a call-up until the very end, but I had imagined this," he told Chi magazine.

"As for the World Cup, Fabio Capello's England will win it."

At club level Toni finds himself at another crossroads. He admits going back to Bayern Munich is unlikely.

"I don't want to go back to Germany and Bayern. Louis van Gaal doesn't want me, and I don't want him.

"My priority is to stay in Italy."
