Italy coach Marcello Lippi has excuted the first stage of his World Cup squad chop. First under the guillotine are Juventus duo Antonio Candreva and Fabio Grosso.
Last week's provisional 30 have now become 28. Here is the list as reported by the FIGC's official website:
Goalkeepers: Buffon (Juventus), De Sanctis (Napoli), Marchetti (Cagliari), Sirigu (Palermo);
Defenders: Bocchetti (Genoa), Bonucci (Bari), Cannavaro (Juventus), Cassani (Palermo), Chiellini (Juventus), Criscito (Genoa), Maggio (Napoli), Zambrotta (Milan)
Midfielders: Camoranesi (Juventus), Cossu (Cagliari), De Rossi (Roma), Gattuso (Milan), Marchisio (Juventus), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Palombo (Sampdoria), Pepe (Udinese), Pirlo (Milan)
Strikers: Borriello (Milan), Di Natale (Udinese), Gilardino (Fiorentina), Iaquinta (Juventus), Pazzini (Sampdoria), Quagliarella (Napoli), Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal).
Lippi will cut down further on June 1 when he hands FIFA his final 23-man list. The Azzurri will meet for their Sestriere training camp on May 23. They leave for South Africa on June 3, and their first World Cup match is on June 14 against Paraguay at the Green Park stadium in Cape Town.
