For the first time in his controversial reign as France coach, Raymond Domenech has received open criticism from a member of the country’s FA, the FFF.
Guy Chambily, who is on the Federal Council of the FFF, has spoken to France Football and has explained that he believes Domenech should lose his role as national team trainer, dissent against the former Olympique Lyonnais boss previously unheard of at such a level.
“First of all, let me say that I do not seek anything personally in my actions,” he explained to the publication. “I have two goals: the departure of Raymond Domenech from his post, and the protection of [FFF president] Jean-Pierre Escalettes, a man very much affected, traumatised even, by the present situation.”
Les Bleus muddled their way through to the finals of the World Cup via a highly controversial play-off victory against the Republic of Ireland. After a mediocre group stage campaign, which came hot on the heels of an awful Euro 2008, increased pressure began to mount on Domenech, though until now he has been immune to criticism from above.
The FFF have indicated that they have no plans to depose their coach prior to this summer’s World Cup tournament, though L’Equipe suggested last Friday that Girondins de Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc is being eyed up for Domenech’s role.
With a contract due to expire in the summer, the France coach, who is anything but popular with the nation’s public, appears set to find himself out of work in the coming months.
