England captain John Terry believes that stand-in skipper Wayne Rooney is a potential candidate to wear the armband in the long run, after the striker led the Three Lions against Brazil in Qatar.

The South Americans came out on top with a 1-0 victory in the friendly clash at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, owing to a second-half header from Nilmar.

Terry, who missed the glamour game through injury, said in The Mirror: "Wayne has been different class.

"He has really matured as a player and he fully deserved to be captain for the night.

"I think long term he is a possible candidate, I really do."
