Fernando Torres risks upsetting Liverpool by telling Spain that he is fit and ready to feature for them after vowing to play on and avoid surgery.

The Reds striker was back on Merseyside after a fleeting visit to Valencia on Thursday and it has been revealed that he is keen to not have surgery on his groin problem, according to reports in the English media.

Rather than go into hospital Torres is hopeful that the injury, which is not considered to be a full hernia, can be resolved without an operation while he continues to play.

Now the Anfield goalscorer will train over the weekend and could be in line to play against Birmingham City on Monday and then report for international duty in midweek.

Spain are due to meet Argentina in a high profile friendly at the Vicente Calderon stadium next Saturday and if the former Atletico  star should tell coach Vicente del Bosque that he can appear in that fixture, he risks upsetting Rafa Benitez, who has been unhappy that he has picked up injuries while away on international duty before.

Torres was told by the medic that he visited in Valencia on Thursday evening that an operation would probably not be necessary, but pushing himself too hard could make the problem worse.
