I Will Stop Cristiano Ronaldo - Hungary's Gabor Gyepes

The Cardiff City defender is looking to shackle 'CR9' just as effectively as they managed last time out, when Hungary were only narrowly beaten...

Gabor Gyepes believes that he can help prevent Cristiano Ronaldo from shining when Hungary take on Portugal in a crunch World Cup qualifier at the weekend.

The Portuguese need a win to keep alive their hopes of claiming even a play-off place in Group 1. Denmark and Sweden are above them but the Scandinavians meet on Saturday.

Cardiff City's defender has reflected on the 1-0 loss in Budapest earlier in the campaign, when Ronaldo was unable to find a way through the packed Hungarian defence.

"Everybody knew we had to beware of Ronaldo,” Gyepes was quoted as saying by the South Wales Echo.

“Portugal may not be ranked No.1 in the world, but on pure technical ability I would rate them the best team.

“But we kept our shape well against them at home and kept things tight.

“Our job was to make sure they didn’t have the time or space to play their football.

“It seemed Ronaldo wanted to play an individual game. On the day he was not a good team player, though he was still dangerous.

“We tried to ensure we always had two defenders ready to stop him when he was on the ball – and more often than not he was down on the pitch after a strong tackle on him.

“He was not able to shine.”
