The young attacker at last made his comeback in Sunday's defeat versus Atalanta and admits he has found life difficult during his time on the treatment table
The Italy international had been sidelined with a foot injury ever since the scoreless draw against Ajax back in December, but came off the bench at half-time in Bergamo for his first official appearance of 2014.
"The only satisfaction is getting back on the pitch, I’m happy for that. It’s been a tough five months for me," El Shaarawy told reporters.
"I am very happy to have made my comeback, but I feel sad about the result. I gave my all for the team."
The 21-year-old then went on to stress that he has not yet given up hopes of making Italy's World Cup squad despite his lack of playing time.
"My objective was to do well in these last few games to convince the Italy coach," he added.
"I believe that I can get called up and I hope I can show that I’m ready."
